WILCOX, Mrs. ELLA WHEELER (ne'e Wheeler) (1850-1919), American poet and journalist, desribed ('The Times', 31 Oct. 1919) as 'the most popular poet of either sex and of any age, read by thousands who never open Shakespeare'. She began to publish poems in 1872, and her last volume, 'Poems of Affection', was published posthumously in 1920. Her books of verse include 'Poems of Pleasure', 'Poems of Passion', 'Poems of Hope', 'Poems of Experience', 'Poems of Progress', 'Poems of Love', 'Poems of Cheer', &c. Her 'Collected Poems' were published in 1921.
